DR. RILEY PIZZA
I started teaching college courses seven years ago and my passion for working with students has been strong ever since. I've taught courses from introductory biology for non-majors, to field courses at biological stations, to systematics courses for upper-level biologists. In each course, though, my goal is the same: When I teach, I hope to take students on a journey of self-discovery, guiding them to become better learners, more confident people, and more knowledgeable citizens.
To meet these goals, I have created several active learning activities for small non-majors labs, inquiry based labs for introductory biology students, and case studies for upper level plant restoration courses. All of these activities were created with clear learning objectives and student-centered pedagogy in mind. To better inform my pedagogy, I also earned a certificate in College Teaching from Michigan state university, with a goal to provides graduate students a comprehensive preparation for teaching at the college level. I am also interested in empirically evaluating teaching strategies to determine if my teaching practices are creating equitable outcomes for all students. You can find information (and materials) for all of these below.
Below you'll find descriptions and links to my teaching materials.
For non-majors biology:
Activity illustrating how vaccines work in a community
Introductions for labs
For Introductory biology:
Inquiry based long-term study on plant growth traits
For upper-level plant biology students:
Case study on ecosystem restoration management
For field-based ecology lab:
Dune-demography activity
For Ecology Lecture:
For Undergraduate Student Researchers:
Statistics Bootcamp and R for beginners (Contact me for materials)
Designed to provide background and training in teaching at the college level, the Graduate Certificate in College Teaching program includes coursework, workshops, and seminars that provide basic information on teaching and learning.
The goals of the program include:
-Intentionally develop your teaching practice
-Engage in a mentored experience to improve your teaching
-Explore state-of-the-art pedagogies in your own discipline
-Prepare for college and university teaching.
-Organize, develop, and document your teaching experiences.
The certificate consists of five competencies and leads to development of a teaching philosophy, which are documented in each of the links.
Competency 1: Developing Discipline-Related Teaching Strategies
Competency 2: Creating Effective Learning Environments
Competency 3: Incorporating Technology into the Classroom
Competency 4:
Understanding the University Context
Competency 5: Assessing Student Learning Through a Mentored Teaching Experience
